Start with the left and right buttons. Each tone should arrive from the matching speaker or ear cup. If it appears elsewhere, check placement, channel balance, and output routing before judging the sound itself. -

Follow the climb
A sweep should rise smoothly from bass to treble. A buzz can come from a cabinet, desk, nearby object, or room resonance; a sudden dip can come from the speaker, output processing, or the listening position. -

Compare the centre
In phase usually feels centred with firmer bass. Out of phase often feels wider and lighter. If the expected in-phase result lacks weight, inspect the positive and negative wire alignment on one physical speaker. -

White noise spreads energy evenly by frequency and can feel bright. Pink noise spreads energy by octave and usually sounds more balanced. Use both in short bursts to compare a room, driver, or audio path.

Does hearing a test tone prove my speakers are fine?
It confirms that this browser audio path and the connected output can reproduce that signal. If only one app is silent, first check that app's mute state, volume mixer, and selected output device.
Can I use this check with headphones?
Yes. The left and right test is especially useful for confirming that each ear cup is worn on its labelled side. Begin at a low level because headphones place the signal close to your ears.
How can I listen for a phase problem?
Compare the in-phase and out-of-phase controls from your usual listening position. A reversed connection often makes the in-phase result seem thin or unfocused, but room placement can also change what you hear.
What should I hear during the frequency sweep?
Expect one continuous tone that climbs in pitch. Note a rattle, sharp change in loudness, or a point where the signal becomes hard to hear, then repeat once at a modest volume to compare the result.
Why might the highest tones be quiet or absent?
The upper range depends on the speaker or headphones, browser output, listening level, and the individual listener. This page is a listening check, not a hearing or equipment diagnosis.
What is the practical difference between white and pink noise?
White noise has equal energy at each frequency, so its high end is prominent. Pink noise has equal energy per octave and tends to feel deeper; it is commonly used as a broad reference when tuning sound systems.
